File Location for "Layout Templates"

Hi Everyone,

I can not find the location of my custom Layout Templates.
I like to make a backup of these, in case I have to do a reinstall.

I have looked in the "Help / About / File Locations (tab)".
But it appears not to be there.

Hi Welcome to the forum.

You should find the file in the About dialog. It is called my.lyts.twm
You can double click the file in that dialog and it will open the folder. Often this can be a hidden folder if you try to find it through windows explorer.

Another question poped up when you explained where the file was.
I expected one file per template.
Seeing only one file, I assume all templates are saved in one file.
Is this correct?

Yes all the user layout templates are stored in the one database file.

Help! I am transferring all TW files to another computer. When I open TW on the new computer I do not have any of my user layouts, only the default ones. When I open TW on my original computer they are all there. If I understand they are stored on my.lyts.twm. I have a compact install on both boxes. I copied all the files theWord folder and both lyts files are 3.1 kb in size. So in a compact install does TW put the actual file somewhere else?

Again, when I open TW on the original the user layouts are all there. But when I open TW on the new box they are gone and only the default layouts show.

Hi Darrel,
3 KB is the default size so I guess that the file you are copying is not the correct one. You could have a peek inside to check.
You should be able to locate the file via theWord ->Help ->About ->File locations tab, All used files (double click to open location):

Hi Jon,
That's what is frustrating me. The file path says Personal Files folder is in TW says it is in "C:'\Program Files (x86)\theWord" and Common Modules is in "C:\users\public\Application Data\The Word". But I am running compact and in the theWord directory I have the default my.lyts.twm file along with theword.exe. When I fire theword.exe it starts TW and I have all my user layouts, which says it must be finding a my.lyts.twm file somewhere else. Is my thinking correct?

Ah, I found it! There was another version that 1.2 Mb in the theWord Books folder. Don't how I put it there but problem solved!
