Some Advanced functions via config.ini are not working

Post by ErikJon »

As I discovered the "advanced functions" in the Html Help today, I put some of them to work. I may have done it incorrectly, but you be the judge.

My config.ini file now begins with the following lines:

[general]
booksearchview.showpopup.on.tree=2
bookview.showpopup.on.links=2
suppress.search.results.underline=1
jump.to.verse.list.on.add=0
ver.3=1
font.greek.name=Gentium
font.hebrew.name=Cardo

(I modified the first 4 lines (after "general") but the last three lines are shown here just for context, as a point of reference)

I am happy to report that lines 3 and 4 are working correctly, but that the first two lines are not (i.e., the ones set to "2") In other words, the following lines added did not change the program behavior in any noticeable way:

booksearchview.showpopup.on.tree=2
bookview.showpopup.on.links=2

In other words, the pop-up window continues to appear on the search results, and any hyperlinks within my bookview windows also show a pop-up window just by hovering over them.

Please tell me what I have done wrong.

You seem to have got it working here, so do you have a duplicate entry?

As to the links in the bookview, it does not apply to xrefs, just links to other topics/books

Thanks, Jon.

Apparently my Bible search settings got re-set by themselves somehow, as I had mentioned before. I would never have selected the option of having the pop-up to appear.

While I generally find ALL pop-ups useful to a beginner, they can become very obtrusive to an experienced user. It's like putting things in the user's face that he did not ask for, and it's worse when the user has no recourse, no option to disable them when they are no longer useful. Most programs seem to allow them to be disabled.

My suggestion to Costas is that he allow the user to disable all hyperlinks of any sort in Bookview, including and ESPECIALLY any verse references, and any other tooltips, balloons, or pop-up windows throughout the program.

I suppose that, out of every 100 Bible references that I come across in Bookview, from day to day, I may open only one of them. I typically just read the text in the window, not the Bible passages referenced therein.

I do not suggest that Costas remove these pop-ups from the program, but simply that he allow the user to disable them, even if only by hacking into the config.ini file, which is simple enough. Better yet, he should allow them to display only when the CTRL key is pressed, as this is a very nice compromise already offered throughout the program. (I suppose the hack would be called "bookview.showpopup.on.biblerefs=2" in the case of the Bible references).

Apparently I am not alone in my frustration with tooltips, pop-up windows, balloon reminders, etc. In recent years I have stumbled across perhaps 100 people online who are so bothered by these things that they take the time to search online for tweaks and advice for disabling them within different programs. I just did a quick search and found the examples listed below, usually accompanied by the words "obnoxious," and "annoying," to describe the feature: The programmers see them as helpful, but the users often see them as obtrusive, as you will see:

I think I am correct in saying that the only popup that we don't have an option for is verse refs in bookview. Most have the ctrl key option.
I am not sure why the verse refs in bookview don't have such an option. I am sure Costas has a note in the code.
I agree that popups/tips can be somewhat annoying. I know I have expressed such annoyance myself.
