Samaritan Pentateuch (Heb/Eng)

Post by aleksig6 »

Hi Everyone,

My name is Aleksandr Sigalov. I've created a digitized version of the Samaritan Pentateuch (located here http://sites.google.com/site/interlinearpentateuch - see download section)

If someone would be so kind to parse and create a module for theWord, I'd really appreciate it. The only thing I'm asking is that you include a copyright (my name) and my web site http://thedeserttabernacle.blogspot.com/ into the module.

I hope this will make a great addition to the software.

Thank you.

The below link is for a module compiled from materials on: http://sites.google.com/site/interlinearpentateuch/. The module is the Masoretic text of the Torah with variants from the Samaritan Torah and Dead Sea Scrolls. There are Strong's numbers (toggle "s"), and an original interpolated English gloss (by AS) triggered by toggling "i". The gloss will also pop up with the Strongs' if configured appropriately.

There are less than a thousand Samaritans left. This is a people who have been around a very long time. They never adopted that 'new' Square Aramaic script that most of us recognize as Hebrew, any books beyond Devarim (Deuteronomy), their textual tradition is to be found in the DSS, and are still a bit put off by those upstart Southerners (Jerusalem-centric Judeans) who have taken over the religion. They have a High Priest, and others, who trace their lineage back to Aaron and beyond, and still sacrifice at the altar on Mt. Gezarim.

Aleksandr's website is very detailed and interesting analysis of the Samaritan Torah. He has compared, word by word, the Masoretic, Samaritan, and Dead Sea Scroll text of the Torah. He details his sources and beliefs on his site. While the large part of the differences are spelling variants, attached and detached prepositions, and the always interesting letter 'vav', most of which will not change the plain meaning of the text, but there are others. In the MT one instance of Elohim (Gen 7:1) becomes the Lord's name in the ST. A few verses later (Gen 7:9), the situation is reversed. To note just one. And of course, there is the 11th Commandment.

At Aleksandr's invitation, the materials of site have be formatted for TW. The base text is the consonantal MT of the Torah. Variants are shown in place. Blue for the Samaritan, red for the DSS. Questions about the content might be directed to Aleksandr through his blog (http://thedeserttabernacle.blogspot.com/). I don't know if he is regular here, but he will be informed of this posting.

Also, apologies to Aleksandr. At one point in compiling the module, the English gloss of the variants was lost. Also, since I prefer not to vocalize the Lord's name, it was changed to YHVH. Elohim was left as "strengths".

Thanks to Aleksandr for the work he put in preparing this material, and also to Jon for helping to sort out some of the code.
