'The Word' version 3 Release Candidate (3.0.0.742)!

Post by csterg »

NOTICE:
24-Mar-2009: The newer RC2 is out, making this RC obsolete. Please, go here

Hello all,
after a long time of waiting and postponing the release candidate (RC) version 3 is here (ver. 3.0.0.742)!

You can download:
1. Binary only update: http://download.theword.gr/bin/rc/getmu ... ry-only-rc (pick this if you have any version installed)
2. Full-package: http://download.theword.gr/bin/rc/getmu ... package-rc
3. Smaller-package: http://download.theword.gr/bin/rc/getmu ... package-rc

(full and smaller packages contain the same resources at the beta of TW3, a list of which can be found here: http://theword.gr/en/index.php/w/beta.download, apart from a new Mickelson/Strong's dictionary).

Things to notice:
1. Although extensive testing has been performed, pls BACKUP your user modules BEFORE installing this release.
2. File locations of modules have been changed. The installer will make sure to move your modules to their proper locations. The modules are no longer in the same folder as the program. To find out all locations used by the program, click on menu 'Help-About' and select the 'File locations' tab. Windows Vista is fully supported now.
3. Error reporting has changed! When an error occurs from this version on, an automatic error report is being uploaded to the main site (bugreport.theword.gr). If you have a firewall you may see an attempt to contact this location, pls allow it to upload the bug report. You also get a dialog asking you if you want to provide details: please, do so! Also provide an email so i have the opportunity to get back to you if something more is needed.
4. 'Release candidate' means that this version is actually the final version, concerning functionallity. From now on, only bugs will be fixed until the final, and maybe minor new features.

What is the next step?
1. Update the language files so translators can start working on the messages
2. Create the help file
3. Create the new site

Concerning existing modules' installer
Due to changes in file locations, the current module installers (the ones found in the site) still use the old directories to install files. Although these are supported, they are not recommended. I will update the installers the next days, as soon as i get some positive feedback on this RC. Sorry for the inconvenience, i will soon update the beta page there (although until the final is out, some module will be 'incorrectly' installed in the program's folder - the final version's installer will fix these anyway so don't worry).

New compact/USB-stick installation
The new installer and program support a compact installation. This is a special type of installation where ALL files are installed under a single directory. Notice that a normal installation will always install user modules under the 'C:' drive. If you want to install EVERYTHING in another drive, pls use a compact installation.
There is also a sub-mode called 'USB Stick'. The name is obvious and is useful to install the whole program (and run it also) from removable media. The same installer can be used to install the program and files many times to different media.

Please, give me your feedback
Either positive or negative. Any problem or glitch is considered a bug. Please, use the forum.

New modules
A new Strong's module has been included, name Mickelson/Strong's. This will be the default Strong dictionary for the program. Check 'About' for more information. Get it separately here:
Mickelson/Strong's

English Standard Version is officially available here

'Maps of the Holy Land' module:
Maps of the Holy Land

Costas

P.S. Special thanks to Jon G. who has invested a lot of time in testing thoroughly the new features and the new installer.

I have noticed one new glitch with the release candidate when used under Linux. There has been a minor problem for a while where if some Bible text is selected with the mouse and then clicked on, that an error will occur. There probably isn't anything that can be done about that other than fixing WINE to deal properly with whatever routine is being used. But I noticed that with this latest release when it crashes it will bring up a new error message box. The problem now is that this new error message box will keep spawning new instances of itself until it locks up the program and the only way to exit out and restart is by killing the program processes. It would be nice if it could be made to throw only one error exception when it crashes.

Thanks for all your efforts.
Now let not get distracted and share it with the rest of the world outside this forum!

Hi everyone,
I uploaded a new build (3.0.0.742) which fixes some issues that came up with the version 3.0.0.734 (one of them quite critical, but not obvious).
Some minor issues reported in the forum are also fixed. I would advice (if you are not yet tired of all version being uploaded) to update to this new build by just selecting the 'binary-only' link.

Sorry for any inconvenience. All links are updated (this thread 's subject also) to read 3.0.0.742 version,

As we approach the final, i think more builds may become available, but the main functionallity of the program will not change.
As always, the link at the top of the forum will always point to the latest build. From now on, all builds will come with an installer (unlike previous intermediate builds that were only compressed).

I was really surprised and delighted to see the "new" candidate. We really are coming to the final showing and it is just great. I was off of the web, had the flu, and being a diabetic, it went pretty hard on me, but I am up and running now, at least as much as I can run. lol Again, so glad to see this release. Thank all who were involved in this timely venture.

MsLile, I hope you recover from all your illnesses. :!:

We´re really getting to an end now. We did many things in 2008.
There were also a few challenges this year. By God´s grace we are, where we are.

I´ll write a newsletter to update everybody...

2. Full-package: http://download.theword.gr/bin/rc/getmu ... package-rc
3. Smaller-package: http://download.theword.gr/bin/rc/getmu ... package-rc
Using IE7:
These don't seem to do what you would expect. When I click on the "full-package-rc" and the "smaller-package-rc", the info at the bottom of the browser in the status area indicates those will be downloaded.

However, both the "full" and "smaller" have the same actual filename. They are different files, since one is about 20MB, and the other is about 10MB. It is a bit difficult (certainly not impossible) to download both.

Perhaps this is "as intended". I was only bringing it to your attention in case it was this way unintentionally.

I was checking both to see if the file "theword.chm" was part of the download ... related to another issue (and it isn't).

That's correct.
The installers are actually being built dynamically as you click the link (the content is being streamed back to you, there is no actual file on the server).
The new site will offer the capability to create packages on the fly by selecting the modules you want and then getting an installer with all those modules. This is the reason that the .exe always has the same name!

Very cool Costas, I had no idea that this was how we received the download. Very interesting!
