BDB and Thayers Lexicons???

Post by engellion »

Hello Costas,

Just wondering, I downloaded ages ago the BDB module (identifier: d2) and Thayers module (identifier: d3) for theWord. I can't seem to find them on the website Library of modules for download.

Are these still available?

Thanks

It was necessary to remove them.

The ones I have came from http://www.wordmodules.com.

or

I hope there's no problem posting these. As far as I know wordmodules.com is careful concerning copyrights and stuff.

Well, we looked closely at the material and found that the source was 'Online Bible, Hebrew and Greek Lexicons'(using data from several sources including BDB and Thayer, and some of LP's thoughts/wording), and Larry Pierce had rights on those. Now at some point the data has been labelled "Thayer" and "BDB" and tweaked into another format. Now Josh has added (and I am sure in good conscience) more data to the mix, with the addition of KJV....

As to the full Thayer on offer, it is public domain so that would be ok, but, it has various other issues with the verse references missing in hundreds of places and is very poorly formatted. (better than the 'abridgement' though).

Are you referring to the Thayer module that was uploaded to wordmodules.com by Rob Sauers? http://www.wordmodules.com/the-word-mod ... k-lexicon/

If so, what are some examples of verse references missing etc?

I agree that it is poorly formatted. I would like to make a project to reformat it, more closely to the original work as shown here http://bluehost.levendwater.org/books/T ... /index.htm

Do you think it would it be worth pursuing to reformat it and correct the verse references?

Looking further at Rob Sauers' Thayers module v1.0, I found downloading the "SBL Biblical Literature" font and choosing "Use the fonts that are defined in the module" improves display of the module.

I applied some further formatting and correction to the content, to better reflect the 1889 printed edition:

Just wondering if this would be a project worth pursuing?

Hi Paul,
I have a printed copy of Thayer's.

It is your call to do as you like but I would not want you to put all this effort into that module for me to say that I have one that is ok to go, but needs another pass of checking and correcting for things missed first time round (I would not normally mention what I am working on, as this always brings with it external pressure and I want to do it in my own time). I do have such a module and it has a slightly different feature of using "link topics", so for the same topic data, there is Greek and Strong's in the topic list. Best of both worlds.

I noticed that Bible Analyzer has used similar data to me.

notice the missing data at the yellow search highlighting.

I found many such places by searching without quotes "; ;" "()" "(," ", ,"

It would be nice to see a full corrected version of Thayer. However I know especially if data is missing it is a lot of work.

Jon, that looks brilliant! Forget my project. Can not wait till you have your Thayers module ready. But will wait patiently, and no pressure on you. "Here is the patience of the saints" :D

Yes, I see now what you mean. It seems the parsing has not picked up the those references to a book that occur after the first reference in a series and only give the chapter and verse.

I note Bible Analyzer, under b. for example, has simply deleted the empty () rather than fill them in with the missing verse (Psalm 144:9 in this case). I much prefer your work, but note it will take time to correct.

If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. Happy to help in whatever way I can.

Do you know if there is a BDB (unabridged) in the works? I have downloaded a Djvu file of BDB, but realize it will be a mammoth task for someone like myself. But I would like to see the BDB formatted as a similar module to your Thayers.

I think I have discovered the answer to my own question. Looks like there is something in the works, but understand work is slow. What can we do to help with the BDB project?

Hi Paul,

I was given some data for BDB and it looked ok but, on closer inspection where verse references had been parsed as links it was a mess at times. Also the topics were in Hebrew only, so Strong's numbers are not there. The other data I have is in pdf form, and in that one for some reason the Hebrew is not in correct word order; again a mess in reality. To try to correct all this would be beyond our ability resource-wise, as there are some 11,000+ topics.

However we do have the TWOT, which is not bad.

BibleAnalyzer just released a full unabridged BDB module. Is there any chance of TW releasing one soon?
