Color schemes to help relieve eyestrain

Post by mathetes »

Maybe someone can be helped by what I've learned in my experience to address situations similar to that discussed in the thread viewtopic.php?p=38829. This is specifically to deal with the issues of eye fatigue due to screen brightness, not necessarily issues stemming from colorblindness or dyslexia. I have created several color schemes for theWord that use darker background colors. Because theWord is not fully skinnable, the classic colors used by the operating system are also modified. There are several aspects to consider when trying to limit the brightness of a screen display:

1. The color background. The creator of a document may have used various colors in that document. Therefore it is difficult to use a dark background consistently in a document window. TheWord does allow the Bible and Book views to individually set the background color for each view. But for a consistent color scheme that matches document windows in other programs, the best that can probably be done is to set the operating system's window background color to a light gray in order to limit the brightness while still being able to have good contrast with the various colors that might be used. The other elements of the program can then use a dark background color to limit the brightness levels. A zip file containing two skins for theWord can be downloaded from https://drive.proton.me/urls/Z75X0YRD20#XCFKOR7n3oOw. There are also several .theme files included to set the colors used by the operating system. These colors have been primarily made to be used in the Linux operating system under Wine, since Wine makes it easy to configure multiple profiles. They can be installed in Linux using the winecfg program (under theDesktop Integration tab, first select "No theme" and then click on "Install theme" to install the new theme). They can be also installed in Windows by double-clicking on them, but please make sure to back up your current theme first, as they will overwrite the color settings in the registry! In Linux, a separate profile can be created for theWord. But in Windows, every program using classic colors will use the colors from this theme. So if that's not what you want, please don't use these themes unless you know how to restore your Windows themes! The one skin in the zip file will use a lighter set of colors. The other skin will use a darker set of colors from the same color theme for non-document window backgrounds. There are still several areas that need fixed in theWord for it to properly use a dark color scheme, so please don't expect perfection, but I have found these skins in conjunction with the OS color themes to be workable for me. And hopefully some fixes for some of the colors will be forthcoming. If you have any questions or any suggestions for improvements please send me a private message.

2. Use of blue screen filters. In the Linux KDE desktop environment, the Night Control can be used to set the color warmth by limiting the amount of blue light being displayed. In other Linux desktop environments, the Redshift program can be used. In Windows, the f.lux program (https://justgetflux.com/) can be used. Since the Window background used by the themes in the zip file are only set to a very light gray, the bluelight filter can be used to further limit the brightness. In this way, all your other documents, such as PDFs using graphics on a white background, will also have the white document backgrounds limited to a grayish color.

3. The monitor settings. The brightness, contrast, and color settings on the monitor can also be used to further modify the brightness levels to the user's liking.

If these skins and themes are helpful, I'd love to hear about it.
