Column width moves in the opposite direction of the slide bar at the top. That is, when I place the pointer on the border between columns at the top "label" row, and the pointer turns into "<-||->", I have to slide it right to make the column to the left move left. The border itself does not move.

It's usable, but counter-intuitive.

I just updated via the menu in The Word, version now is 7.0.0.1567. Still has the odd behavior.

I'm sorry, but I'm too dim to understand the "zoom" question.

To add and confirm NorrinRadd's observation:

If I place the cursor between Last Updated and Price, as shown, and move the cursor to the left, the Last Updated column gets smaller and the price column stays the same size. I would tend to expect the price column to increase, but the way to increase the Price column is to place the cursor at the right of the Price column and move it to the right, and then the Price column expands to the left as you move to the right. So if you place the cursor on the right side of a column and move the cursor, the left side of the column moves the opposite direction.

The dividers to the left of Size act more as I would expect where the side of the column the cursor is on actually moves with the cursor.

I'm using Linux with Wine

Not on Windows, and haven't set any zoom settings as I recall.

This more than likely has to do with trying to find space to adjust the widths.
Have you tried starting on the left most columns and moving them to the left and adjusting as going?
It sounds like the right most column has no room to grow.

I tried it and it seems I did momentarily have the columns adjusted so that they did act as expected, but it still seems finicky, or something.

Like here, I place the cursor between Last Updated and Price and move to the right, I would expect the Price column to shrink, instead the Last Updated column expands to the left, and the Title column which is already too small shrinks further, while the two columns in between (Size and Author) and the first column with the check boxes remain the same size. So I find it confusing but workable.
